When I came to work for Specialized, first as a writer, then as head of marketing, Rich Silverstein had personally developed  the concepts and look for this ad series. All I did was the text and some creative direction for our in-house design department. Even Rich liked the ad—one of the compliments I’m most proud of.

Traveling Europe with Specialized and the Festina Team

Fifth in a series of ads about racing, traveling, and really nice road bikes

Nice folks, those Europeans. Of course they all thought we were crazy, a California mountain bike company coming all the way onto their home turf and supplying S-Works road bikes to Team Festina for the greatest bike races in the world.

But we figured, what the heck, we’ve been making road bikes for like 20 years, and we’d get to travel to Europe with guys named Christophe and Angel and Joseba, sitting in cafes in really old cities drinking wine and talking about Nietzsche (he’s European too).

And you know what? After David Plaza won the Tour of Germany and Marcel Wust won a Tour de France stage and Joseba Beloki and Christophe Moreau ended up finishing 3rd and 4th, well, things just opened right up. Or maybe having the lightest frame in the Tour had something to do with it.

Anyway, we had so much fun we’re going again next year. So come on over and we’ll eat some brie together and watch the races. They do that here, you know.
